In 1937, Michael van Beuren reached Mexico for the first time, deeply struck by the historic moment the nation was living -a moment that saw a new middle class emerge with its own set of aspirations and identity questions, avid to leave the past behind and embrace the modern.

The present volume recounts the story of a designer that understood both the needs of a nation and its salient culture as part of an incessant search for the modern. It also tells the story of a factory's birth amid a unique social and economic context. Under the guidance of the van Beuren brothers, the factory became a bastion of Mexican twentieth-century industrial design.
