Karla Read does not seek to simply capture events with her camera: she provokes what she finds. Subtly staging a wide range of nuanced and disquieting situations, her work places us in the in-between, in that grey fluid space where life actually unfolds. Her compositions are located far from the city, as if existing in the margins. They are a reflection of an inner world that takes shape in nature. Her images do not shine with a local brightness. They are of a subdued tropicality, tinted with a hint of smoky black ink.Intimately photographed, faces appear to be watching us from afar, or else lost in their own thoughts.
